DRUGS STEAL THE MAGIC!

SOME OF WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SHOW.....

*I talk with the kids about how drugs steal the magic from inside. I explain that one of the factors is the drugs change how we perceive the world. With out drugs we see things as they really are. Displaying two large playing cards I say this is the face of the card and this is the back of the card (I fold each card in half one the long way and one the short way). I place one card inside the other and say with the cards folded the outside of the card is on the outside and the inside is on the inside. But drugs mess with your perception (I push one card through the other and it turns inside out)!!

Words can’t describe this weird effect, but it has on many occasions been met with audible gasps.

You see a person who takes drugs alters their reality and may do something dangerous thinking they are seeing reality but they aren’t. And if a person uses drugs long enough their mind may never be the same.

*Another important point we discuss is the importance of teamwork. Especially when it comes to saying NO to drugs. At this point we discuss the concept of peer pressure and the fact that their best friends are their parents. I invite two friends up onstage with me and ask them to work together. They destroy a piece of paper and put it back together to make a gift but inside the hat is another gift. So both friends walkaway with a special gift. Of course I point out the real gift is a friend who will back you when someone approaches you with drugs.

*Towards the end of the program we chat about using your imagination and the importance of

controlling your attitude. I explain that it is important to imagine what they would do if someone asked them to use drugs. I continue by telling them that great athletes use their imagination to picture making the perfect shot in their mind. They do it over and over again so that when the time comes and they need to make that shot, it’s a no brainer. They have an attitude of success. Same thing with drugs if you imagine how you will deal with a person offering you drugs and you think about what your going to say and how you’ll say it, when it happens you’ll be ready. I follow this up with an illusion where it appears that I fail. I then reiterate the importance of attitude and I turn around the outcome of the trick to be positive thanks to my imagination and attitude.

The Magic of Cooperation!

2. ATTACK THE PROBLEM...NEVER THE PERSON!
3. ALWAYS WORK FOR A WIN/WIN SOLUTION!

SOME OF WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SHOW.....

*I explain to the kids that even if we don’t agree with someone we always treat that person with respect! I follow this up with a trick that is pretty lame that everyone can figure out. To say the least they let me know it...I remind them not to jump all over me and they need to treat me with respect even if they don’t like the trick. I then try to improve the trick but they still aren’t satisfied(They think they know the secret). I finish with a funny and mind boggling ending winning their RESPECT.

*Attack the problem not the person...to demonstrate I show 2 pieces of rope (red & white). I tie a knot in the white rope and explain that this will represent a problem, a knotty problem if you will (very punny), the trick is to make the problem disappear. I then ask the group what things can we do to solve a problem? The knot does disappear from the white rope only to be found on the red rope (I explain, that’s not solving the problem that’s passing the problem on to someone else). We finally solve the problem in an unexpected way but none the less it’s a win win solution!

*For the final point of the program I play a game with my own 20$ bill. I have a child sign their name upon my bill and place it in a money envelope. We mix that envelope with 4 others that have nothing but worthless strips of paper. My assistant goes out to the audience and they select 4 envelopes leaving one for my assistant. The four selected envelopes are placed in a paper shredder and destroyed (much to the delight of the children). I explain that I am not concerned because my assistant took good care of my money. I ask the child to open the envelope and show the signed bill. But the child finds paper instead of the bill. I proceed to get all bent out of shape ask them what did they not understand...why did they let this happen...that’s my lunch money. The audience is quick to point out that this is no way to solve a problem. So we review the 3 points. We finally find my signed bill inside a balloon that has been in full view for the entire show.

Be Aware, Be Alert, BE SAFE!
1. Be Aware of your surroundings!
2. Be Alert of what others do.
3. BE SAFE by thinking and reacting in a SAFE manner!

SOME OF WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SHOW.....

*To start off the show I talk about how important it is to be AWARE. I explain that most accidents can be avoided if a person simply is aware of what’s going on. After talking about this I proceed to do a routine where something happens that I am totally unaware of and the kids have a blast pointing this out to me.

*We talk a little bit about approaching animals that aren’t ours or wild. To make the point I introduce them to a very lifelike raccoon called, ROCKY! Before Rocky does his remarkable magic trick, I have the children role play coming up to ask to pet Rocky.

*Our big finale’ is playing the A W A R E game. On a little stand are 5 envelopes each with a letter from the word AWARE. 4 children pick an envelope and find gum inside the 5th one (my envelope) has a 20$ bill. It pays to be AWARE.
